A green area near the city centre, in which parks Zelengaj and Tuškanac are connected to the Upper Town, creating a combination of nature and history. Medveščak is a city neighbourhood where you can run away from the crowd and enjoy walking the old city core, exploring history of Zagreb an truly sensing the city's soul.
If you head down Vlaška and further on Maksimirska Street, east of the Ban Josip Jelačić square, you will reach Maksimir. Maksimir is a city area that spreads from over the slopes of Medvednica, all the way down to the urban lowland and Zvonimirova street. It's one of the oldest city areas, widely known for the most beautiful park in Zagreb - Maksimir Park. First ZOO in this part of Europe, dating back to 1925, is located there, and right across the street is the Maksimir stadium where you can enjoy football matches played by Dinamo football club or the Croatian national team.
Dubrava is located in the eastern part of the city, between Maksimir and Sesvete. Back in the past it was a church estate surrounded by oak forest so it's name origins from old word ‘dub’ meaning oak. Dubrava is known for it's Public University with it's active children's theatre and art centre, and for it's strong private enterpreneurship. Find your place in one of Dubrava's small domestic hotels or houses.
Trnje is the city area which has owergrown from a peripheral settlement to a central business zone of Zagreb. There you can find business scyscrapers, modern hotels, university buildings, the National library, The City Hall, the national TV station centre, "Vatroslav Lisinski" concert hall and many other significant institutions. Trnje is a city area wich invites you to get away from the city crowd, walking the bank of river Sava.
Southern part of Zagreb, on the right side of river Sava, is called New Zagreb. With the population of over 100.000 it could be called the city inside the city. Although it's mainly residential area, the proximity of Zagreb Fair center, business centres, shopping malls and the airport makes it an ideal choice for guests who come to Zagreb on business. In New Zagreb you can enjoy walking down the horse race track or stroll along the park by the Bundek Lake.
Trešnjevka is an old city area celebrated in "The Ballad of Trešnjevka". It's a special sensation to be there in spring when gardens of small, romantic, family houses wake up and turn green, and when orchards are decorated with ripe cherries (treπnje) after which Tešnjevka was named. The soul of this city area is definitely the Trešnjevka market. There you can always see a familiar face, buy fresh groceries or comment on the current happenings. Also located on Trešnjevka, Dom sportova, "Dražen Petrović" basketball centre and the "Zagreb Football Club" stadium always provide interesting sports events.
If you head east from the main square, down the longest street in Zagreb – Ilica, you will reach Črnomerec. In the 14th century Črnomerec was just a village right next to Sveti Duh monastery, and today it spreads from the wine-rich slopes of Medvednica in the north all the way to the old industrial zone in the south. In this city area you can feel the scent of one of the oldest coffee factories in Zagreb or visit the Zagreb brewery where you can have a glass of tasty local beer and try some of the famous specialties of Zagreb cuisine.
